Honey, I Shrunk the Shirt

[Project disConnect day 6]

A long time ago (I don't really remember when) my sister gave me a shirt of her husband's that he had ripped beyond repair. The fabric was in great condition otherwise. It's not often that I turn down free fabric, so I took it and put it with my stash to sit forever. The other day I found it again and decided that I should make a shirt for my nephew with it! I drew up a pattern and found a way to use the original buttons and buttonholes because my sewing machine's buttonhole feature doesn't work. It is pretty much a replica of the bigger shirt, but with a few less details.

I sewed all the seams with my serger and my normal sewing machine. The seams inside look very professional and of course I totally forgot to take photos of them before I tossed it in the mail. Oh well! :)

It was funny to get this little shirt in the mail and be reminded of the original shirt of Jake's. He ripped it last August while playing football in the park with some co-workers. I was 8 1/2months pregnant, sitting in the grass and chatting with a couple other wives. One happened to be an OBGYN, and the other was also named Tara and had her 9 month old son there. Now I have a 9 month old boy of my own - and he has a shirt like his Daddy wore that day!

That is such a cool idea to make that out of his Daddy's old shirt. It gives new meaning to the term 'hand-me-down'.
