Gavin's Curtains

Friday, May 13, 2011

I have had this project sitting in the back of my head since we moved into this apartment 10 months ago. Yep, it took a while for such a simple project! Our apartment had really ugly curtains so I wanted to make some cute ones for the little guy's room. They are finally finished and hung!

I bought some blue fabric with cute clouds on it because it goes with what is on the rest of his walls. I tacked a piece of white ribbon on the window frame on each side so I could tie the curtains back. And here is what the curtains look like when they are shut:

Blackout! I used blackout drapery lining on the back side so that we could make the room dark. This is useful at nap time or in the summer when Gavin's bedtime is before the sun's bedtime! The lining is also supposed to block noise, but we've never really had a problem with noise anyways. Hopefully we'll be having a few extra sleep-ins (you know, like 7:30 a.m. instead of 6:30) with these up!

Also, this is kind of random, but I bought my fabric at Fabric.com. They are not paying me to write this, I just feel like I need to share it. I love going to fabric shops to look at the fabric, touch it, and just waste huge amounts of time, but I've never been a fan of the prices. I bought fabric from Fabric.com for the first time when I made the most recent diaper bag and since then, I just can't justify buying anything from a fabric store. Fabric.com's prices are amazingly cheap, often half or a third of the price I would be charged in a store. For example, the fabric for these curtains cost me under thirty dollars on Fabric.com, while it would have cost me almost eighty at the fabric store. I saved money making instead of buying these curtains, where I wouldn't have if I had bought the fabric in a store. Even with the cost of shipping (us Canadians don't get the free shipping deal!) it is still significantly cheaper than buying from a store. Basically, Fabric.com makes sewing an affordable hobby.

Haha... this is so appropriate for me right now because I am totally regretting not lining our curtains! Ben woke up at 5:30 this morning and wouldn't go back to sleep because - hey! - it's light out! So here I am reading your blog at 6 am on a Saturday...

Maybe you could make some kind of make-shift thing, like clothes-pinning a blanket on or making a detachable lining (velcro or snaps come to mind). If he is still sleeping in your room it might not be worth it, but having something to darken his room will be handy since you will have lots of years with him in that room. Naps are so much easier when the room is dark, but so far Gavin has been getting up just as early (before 7 a.m.) in the morning.
